Welcome Families!

This blog was created to keep you informed about what our class is up to. We are kicking off a literacy unit all about SURVIVAL. We are trying to figure out what it means to survive through hardship, and what it takes to carry us through hardship. We are going to be reading lots of really great books and doing some pretty fun projects. You can follow along by reading the books or just checking out what our class us up to here on the blog. Ms. Melissa will be posting updates about the unit, including photos of our class concept map and our really cool wire fence project that goes with the book she's reading out loud, Crossing the Wire by Will Hobbs. It's going to be a really exciting unit, so we hope that you will check out the blog from time to time and leave us some comments. Maybe ask us some challenging questions, and we'll work together to get you great response!! HAPPY READING!!

Holocaust Survior Guest Speaker

I am working on organizing a guest speaker from the Washington State Holocaust Education Resource Center. As we continue to talk about what it takes to survive through hardship, hearing first-hand from someone who endured possibly one of the most difficult hardships in recent history, would be a really special and enriching experience. These speakers are trained in speaking to groups of children and will not expose students to anything too traumatic or disturbing. They have spoken at schools all around Washington state. We would also receive biographical information before our speaker comes, so that we can be prepared and informed about geographical and historical facts prior to the visit.

This program would not cost much, speakers volunteer with the education center, however if we are able to arrange this event, we would like give back with a donation for future education.
If you are willing to assist through a donation please email me at naylorm@seattleu.edu. Please know that this is NOT required in order to have the speaker.

Ms. Nani and I are both very excited about this possibility, and really hope we can make it work!
